This is really some great advice. If you seek out the actual companies you want to work for, find the decision maker and send your resume directly, you'll stand out above the others who use websites like careerbuilder.

Nice tip regarding the spreadsheet too. This is a case where going against the grain is a good thing!

Not a bad list of suggestions. Getting a list of good contacts for all the places you are attempting to get a position sounds like an excellent start, and a good way to help ensure that you have an actual person evaluating your qualifications.

Patience coach, I'll be getting there in the next few posts... still gotta build the resume in the next post, then deliver, then interview, then follow up... this is not in real time of course, if it were I would probably be the most unproductive person ever!

Ryan - Getting your foot in the door is the easy part, it's the next 2 steps that really matter. Get the interview first and the follow-up, follow-up, follow-up. Virtually everyone I have ever hired was the one that was willing to work to get the job in the first place. I've rarely been disappointed.

Don't send the resume, hand deliver!

Side note for you.

If you don't have MS Office, go beyond google docs and download Open Office. Same suite (word, excel, powerpoint, databases) for free. Many of the same functions as Microsoft, some are slightly different.

I like the idea of having the spreadsheet of the places you've applied with the numbers. It's great to keep it all in one place!
