This is really some great advice. If you seek out the actual companies you want to work for, find the decision maker and send your resume directly, you’ll stand out above the others who use websites like careerbuilder.

Nice tip regarding the spreadsheet too. This is a case where going against the grain is a good thing!

Not a bad list of suggestions. Getting a list of good contacts for all the places you are attempting to get a position sounds like an excellent start, and a good way to help ensure that you have an actual person evaluating your qualifications.

Side note for you.

If you don’t have MS Office, go beyond google docs and download Open Office. Same suite (word, excel, powerpoint, databases) for free. Many of the same functions as Microsoft, some are slightly different.
